Authorities have imposed Section 144 in Cox’s Bazar after the BNP and ruling party’s youth unit Juba League announced rallies at the same venue for Monday.
To avert any untoward incident, the authorities on Sunday night imposed the restriction, confirmed Cox’s Bazar Additional District Magistrate Abu Sufian.
The restrictions have been imposed in areas adjacent to the BNP office and Shaheed Swarani road in the town and will be in place from dawn on Monday till Tuesday morning, Abu Sufian said.
Cox’s Bazar district unit BNP earlier announced to hold the rally on Shaheed Swarani Road demanding the release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and her treatment abroad. On the other hand, the district unit Juba League declared a rally as part of their Victory Day celebrations in front of the Shaheed Minar.
Central BNP leaders including Standing Committee Member Nazrul Islam Khan, Chairperson’s Advisor Mizanur Rahman Minu and Organizing Secretary Mahbubur Rahman Shamim were likely to attend the rally.
Cox’s Bazar district unit General Secretary Shamim Ara Swapna confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
BNP planned to hold rallies across the country to press home their demand for the unconditional release of Khaleda Zia, who was convicted in corruption cases.
However, the government maintains that there is no scope under the law to allow her to go abroad. It has suspended the BNP chief’s sentence several times to allow her to stay at her home, instead of the jail, and take treatment at any hospital inside the country.
The BNP has also boycotted the president’s talks being held with political parties over the formation of the new Election Commission, as they demand elections under a non-partisan government.
