In the face of criticisms, Narayanganj 4 lawmaker Shamim Osman on Monday declared that he started campaigning for the Awami League-nominated candidate for the city corporation election, Dr Selina Hayat Ivy.

He expressed his support for the Boat symbol candidate at a press conference, and warned that no one would be allowed to play with the interest of the people in Narayanganj.

Meanwhile, Ivy on Monday termed rival candidate Taimur Alam Khandaker a parrot who only “speaks the language of Shamim Osman”.

She alleged that the local top Awami League leader, Shamim Osman, had created a ground for Taimur over the past two years to contest against Ivy.

She was speaking to journalists after paying tribute to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman marking Bangabandhu’s Homecoming Day in Narayanganj on Monday.

Meanwhile, police have detained Monirul Islam, the election coordinator of Taimur Alam and acting convenor of district unit BNP, from his house in Hirajheel area of Siddhirganj.

Officer-in-Charge of Siddhirganj police Moshiur Rahman confirmed that they had picked up Monirul in the afternoon. “He has a number of cases filed against him,” he added.

On Sunday, supporters of Taimur Alam filed a complaint with the Election Commission alleging harassment by police. The complaint was filed by Taimur’s chief election agent ATM Kamal.

According to the complaint, police are searching Taimur’s supporters and activists in the upcoming Narayanganj City Corporation polls, and threatening their families to not campaign for Taimur.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Taimur alleged that Ivy was making indecent comments about him, violating electoral conduct.

He said that police were harassing his supporters across 27 wards of the city corporation.

“Police have also detained an employee of newly elected Chairman of Dhamgar union Kamal Hossain for participating in my election rally,” he added.
