More than 50 people, including dozens of children, were injured in a gas cylinder explosion at Comilla’s Nangalkot Upazila on Thursday.
No casualties have been reported so far. Of the injured, 38 with critical injuries were sent to Comilla General Hospital.
Confirming the matter, Upazila Health Officer Deb Das Deb said a group of youths tried to inflate a balloon by connecting it to a gas cylinder at Birulia village of the upazila around 6pm.
“At the time, many villagers gathered at the place in a crowd. Suddenly, the cylinder exploded, injuring dozens in their heads and eyes,” he added.
At least 41 injured were first taken to Nangalkot Upazila Health Complex. However, as the condition of 38 people was critical, they were referred to Comilla General Hospital.
Faruq Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Nangalkot police station, said police were yet to detain those responsible for the incident.
Experts say even though such blasts are nothing new, the authorities can stop the recurrence by monitoring the use of cylinders by balloon vendors. Apart from local administration, law enforcers and community leaders can play a role in creating awareness.
