For a city as dependant on buses as Dhaka, the public transport sector has been in shambles for a while now
It is good to see that the much coveted Dhaka Nagar Paribahan Service has finally started operations. The service currently has 50 buses under its employ, with plans of eventually doubling that number. The much beloved late Mayor of Dhaka, Anisul Huq, had come up with the franchise model in 2015.
For a city as dependant on buses as Dhaka, the public transport sector has been in shambles for a while now. From unfair price gauges to regular accidents on the roads due to the carelessness of drivers, this is a sector that has been screaming reform for a long time.
The franchise system aims to do just that, with private company Trans Silva already working with relevant authorities with 20 buses under the new franchise system. Hopefully, this is the encouragement that other private stakeholders will need to mend their ways and join the system.
Let’s make sure this is properly implemented. The authorities have taken a commendable step, but they must see it through. Proper timelines have to be established with relevant checks and balances so that progress and accountability are ensured. And due to the sensitive nature of the project, the authorities have to make sure that they get things right on the first try, as a massive initiative like this will effect the entire country’s future. The former mayor had high hopes for Dhaka. Let’s make sure those hopes are honoured.
